Unexpected job loss

Living Expenses

Cynthia, age 48, worked in the packaging department of her newspaper for nearly 22 years. While she enjoyed the work and the camaraderie, Cynthia struggled to make ends meet for herself and young daughter. She contacted the Foundation for financial assistance with rent after missing work due to an illness. When she learned that she would be laid off as the printing facility at the Baltimore Sun would be closing, she reached out to discuss job training options. With the help of the Foundation, Cynthia received assistance with professional training, testing fees and related expenses. When she completed the job training, she earned her certificate as a medical assistant and phlebotomist. She now has a full-time job in her new career and is earning a stable income.
